Welcome to

of Black Hawk and Bremer Counties, Iowa.
updated on April 15, 2002

The Cedar River Festival Inc. is proud to announce it's 15th Anniversary. While we wish our efforts were no longer necessary, we have come once again to ask the Cedar Valley community to join us in our annual river clean up, which shall occur this July 13, 2002. Be a local hero and aid our effort to make our community a better place, whether it's helping on shore to pick up paper and other waste in our parks, or down and dirty  in the river hauling out appliances that have been carelessly dumped by others. Both large and small - we need your help to get it done.

The Cedar River Festival was formed in 1988 to clean up the waterways and land in the
Bremer / Black Hawk Co. area. Its purpose is to increase awareness of our resources, build concern for water quality, and to show the volunteers appreciation for their work. Since 1988, hundreds of volunteers have removed more than 80 TONS of garbage and contaminates. Even though it is a grass-roots organization, it has won the attention and admiration of local citizens, government officials, Midwest Living magazine and soon on Iowa Public Broadcasting (IPTV)!

In order to facilitate this we are once again putting forth a competition for to see who can provide the most volunteer help, and bring in the most trash by awarding our traveling trophy that is awarded to the group that achieves this feat. There shall be a winner chosen in both the group/ company and individual team categories, as well as a special award for the most unique trash collected. By doing this we hope to make an already rewarding event even more fun, with the end result of making our Cedar River basin a better and safer place to live and enjoy. We commemorate the Brown Bottle restaurant of Cedar Falls for winning our first year's challenge, and now wish to congratulate the staff and management of PetCo for being last year's ultimate go-getters. Will your group be the one to step up to the plate next?

This year we are planning on meeting at 8:30 a.m. in Black Hawk Park on the North side of Cedar Falls. The bus will then take volunteers to the canoe loading spot.   However, as there are a limited amount of canoes available, we can only provide to those who call and request them first, unless we have enough advance warning to acquire more. So please make your requests as soon as possible, or provide your own.
We have also joined in an coordinated effort with the Black Hawk County Conservation Department to hit a number of areas that may fall in your own neighborhood that do not involve the need of a canoe. There are some areas near the water that are in desperate need and could be cleaned up by  smaller individual groups with just a morning effort. As with the main river cleanup, we'll supply  the means to remove the trash and all we need from you is the effort. These Cedar River areas and the times to meet us include the West Fork Access 9 -10 a.m., Thunder Woman Park 10 -11, Washington Union Access 11- 12 , (Noon lunch with canoers) Falls Access &  Beaver Creek Access 1 - 2, and Cornielius Access 2 - 3. Volunteers for this effort are to meet at 8:30 a.m. at Black Hawk Park as well, and car pooling will be used to hit our target areas.
Then, July 14, the Sunday following the cleanup, we shall hold our annual Cedar River Arts and Music festival from 12-8 , at Cedar River Park in Waterloo. We welcome all of you to come on out and celebrate our combined efforts to improve our river resources, by enjoying a day of live music. There will also be all the information and art & craft booths, and plenty of activities for the kids.

If your organization, business, family, or you as an individual would like to sponsor or participate in the annual cleanup effort, would desire to have a booth to promote your environmental efforts and display your wares, or would like further information on our organization and it's efforts - please feel free to contact us at Cedar River Festival Inc.
